Five unique places in Darjeeling

The small town of Darjeeling is not only about tea states and amazing mountain views. There are many other things to see in the city. The five most important are listed here.
Bengal Natural History Museum
The museum was started in 1903 to display butterflies and birds of the Darjeeling district.  Today it houses a large collection of mammals, birds and nests with eggs, reptiles, fishes and insects of wide varieties in the specimen form. The Museum is situated at a few minute walk from the Chowrasta, Mall.
Observatory Hill and Mahakal Temple
Observatory Hill is a place in Darjeeling to get a 360 view of the town and the surrounding peaks. The Mahakal Temple is the central temple of Darjeeling which is revered by people of all faiths. It is located on top of the observatory hill at the site of the original Dorjeling Buddhist Monastery.
Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre
The centre was established in 1959 to rehabilitate Tibetans who escaped from their homeland following the Dalai Lama during the period of mayhem. They opted for self help in order to sustain themselves. Located on a hilltop, the centre is approachable from the Lebong Cart Road. Tibetan people produce exquisite hand crafted items like woollen carpets, shawls, carved wooden stuffs and leather items. There is also an outlet for the sale of these items.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) and the Darjeeling Zoo
Located on Jawahar Road or the Birch, the HMI is considered as a pilgrimage for the mountaineers of the world. It was established in honour of Tenzing Norgay who along with Sir Edmund Hillary scaled the peak of Everest in 1953. The institute has a rich museum displaying many expedition artifacts. It has a boarding school for mountaineering students, houses for the trainers, a restaurant and a souvenir shop. The Zoo is located in the same area. It uniquely houses animals of high altitude, mostly from the upper Himalayas. Here one can see rare animals here like Red Panda, Snow Leopards and Tibetan Wolf.
Batasia Loop
As the name suggests, it is a loop of the narrow gauge railway track. Here the Toy Train negotiates a sharp descent from Ghoom by taking a 360 degree turn. It is 5 kms from Darjeeling Town, just below Ghoom, the highest station of Darjeeling Himalayan railway. From wonderful place from where one can have wide range view of the Darjeeling's landscape and the mountain peaks surrounding it.
